Demand Accountability for Ever Red - Ellerslie Tree Removal
The Issue
As you may have noticed, developer Ever Red cut down the entire tree line next to Dr. Margaret Ann Armour School right before the first day of school - trees spanning both their private property and adjacent public land.
This vital green space sat directly on the boundary separating the school grounds from the future high-density EVER District residential site.
The Impact:
Wildlife Displaced: Local birds and wildlife relying on the canopy were forced out with zero warning right before the winter months. Established nesting areas reused every season were demolished. This territory loss has created tension between bird species, causing an increase in fighting and dead birds found nearby.
Lost Play Space: Kids lost a natural buffer and a familiar play space they grew up with.
Safety Concerns: Parents are now deeply worried about the sudden lack of a physical boundary between a busy schoolyard and an active, high-density construction zone. The planned residential development includes hundreds of homes which will now have immediate access/view to the elementary/junior high school grounds, instead of a natural boundary.
Where Things Stand:
The environmental assessment and tree study used to justify the removal has not been made public, so there is currently no way for the community to verify the claims. Because part of this tree line sat on public land, its removal is also subject to the City's Public Tree Bylaw, which requires a permit and can carry fines for non-compliance — including for developers who provide false information to obtain approval. We are seeking confirmation that a valid permit was actually obtained for this work.
Based on information developers provided the city, they claimed the assessment found that the majority of the removed trees were dead. However, we have Google Street View imagery from every year since 2015 showing this tree line fully leafed and green — directly contradicting the claim that the majority of these trees were dead.
This is part of a broader pattern rather than a one-off issue, as EverRed has multiple developments planned across Edmonton. Unannounced clear-cutting of public land next to a school sets a concerning precedent.
What We Are Demanding:
1. Public release of the environmental assessment and tree study used to justify this removal.
2. Confirmation that a valid Public Tree Bylaw permit was obtained for the portion of trees on public land.
3. Environmental Impact Assessments prior to further clearing on all Ever Red projects in Edmonton.
4. A Remediation and Replanting Plan for the destroyed habitat. This will also serve to re-establish a natural boundary between the school grounds and the planned development.
