As a freshman at Dripping Springs High School, I recently came to know that our school counselor is openly gay. This revelation has sparked significant concerns among me, my friends, and many other students and parents in our community who hold the religious and core values we cherish deeply. These values are foundational to our identity and way of life, and it feels unsettling to have someone in a position of influence who does not reflect those beliefs. 

Our community is built upon a rich tradition that emphasizes the importance of faith, family, and mutual respect. The role of a school counselor is critical; it comes with the responsibility to provide guidance and support to students, helping to shape their futures and influence their perspectives on life. Given the magnitude of this role, it is vital that the person in this position embodies the values we cherish as a community. Students need guidance that aligns with their upbringing and the principles instilled in them by their families.

As we navigate our formative years in high school, we look to authority figures, such as our counselors, for support during challenging times. It is imperative that these individuals uphold and reflect our community's values. However, many students and parents are feeling increasingly uneasy about the type of counsel provided by someone whose beliefs may not align with our own. This concern extends beyond personal biases; it is about ensuring our children receive the support that resonates with the values we work hard to instill in them at home.

The very fabric of our community—its ethics and traditions—feels threatened when we consider the continued employment of a counselor whose beliefs differ from the foundational values of Dripping Springs.
