Being a passionate follower of Spanish football, a recent incident has sparked my need to call to attention the inconsistencies in the refereeing in our beloved league. Yesterday, in the intense match between Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid, the referee made a disturbing decision. An incorrect penalty was given and when the VAR was consulted, instead of providing clarity, it fueled more confusion. The on-site referee asked for more images of the foul, but he was informed there were none. Despite the uncertainty, the referee chose to issue a penalty.

We believe in the essence of fair play and right calls are integral to maintaining its spirit. However, the track record of refereeing in the Spanish football league has often been called into question. According to a study done by the Association of Spanish Football Historians and Statisticians, in the 2018-2019 season there were 69 contentious referee decisions that drastically affected the game's results.

We're calling for the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and Professional Football League (LFP) to uphold the integrity of the beautiful game by ensuring unbiased arbitration. We demand serious attention be given to the training of referees and the implementation of technologies like VAR. It is also vital that all rulings are transparent and referees are held accountable for their decisions.
