Demand Accountability and Reimbursement from CRA for Privacy Breach
The Issue
Like many Canadians, I trusted the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to safeguard our financial details and perform its duty with integrity. However, a recent privacy breach has shaken our faith in this institution. Despite being informed, officials within the CRA overlooked the breach, leading to fraudulent payouts from Canadian taxpayers' hard-earned money.
According to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, there were 678 reported incidents involving the unauthorized access, disclosure or disposal of personal information held by federal institutions between 2016 and 2019 (Annual Report to Parliament 2019-2020 - Privacy Act). We now know that this report was grossly under reported by tens of thousands and the payout to fraudulent claims nears $190M of taxpayer money. In light of this statistic, the negligence of CRA officials who were aware of the breach is unacceptable. These officials need to be held accountable by being removed from their positions.
Furthermore, the CRA has a duty to those whose money was paid out fraudulently due to its lack of adequate security. It is critical that they rectify this situation by reimbursing those affected. Doing so would be the first step in regaining the trust of the Canadian people and helping the country to recover economically.
Therefore, we call upon the CRA to take immediate action. This includes removing implicated officials from their posts, reimbursing the fraudulent payouts, and enhancing their data security protocols.
