My grandson, Keegan Dean Kennedy, a 17-year-old full of potential, dreams, and a life yet to fully unfold, was shot and killed by local law enforcement. The official reports released concerning Keegan's death contain numerous discrepancies when compared to the raw footage available and the medical examiner’s report. These inconsistencies cannot and should not be ignored or swept under the rug. Justice requires not only a thorough investigation but one that is unbiased and transparent. True closure can only come from understanding the whole truth and holding to account those who must bear responsibility.
We call on the District Attorney, the City Council, the State Attorney General, and Governor to enact an immediate and comprehensive investigation. This must be grounded on facts that are cross-verified with footage and reports, without prejudice or partiality, with outcomes made accessible to the public. The public trust is at stake; transparency is crucial in restoring that trust.
Furthermore, we urge the implementation of policy reforms aimed at enhancing accountability within the law enforcement system. Introducing mandatory use of body cameras, holding regular sensitivity training, ensuring victim-support initiatives, and independent oversight in investigations involving law enforcement could prevent future heartbreak for other families.
