The Issue

KCKPS students, families, educators, and taxpayers deserve a Board of Education that asks hard questions, scrutinizes spending, and demands accountability. They also deserve a Board that gets the facts right.

In a recent KMBC report, Board Member Dr. Valdenia Winn described district lodging expenses as “$700” and “$900” hotel rooms and remarked, “Nice for one night.”

KCKPS subsequently stated that those figures represented the total cost of multi-night stays, not nightly hotel rates. The district also says the underlying travel information had previously been provided to the Board through Finance Committee meetings, budget meetings, and other proceedings.

Questions about public spending are legitimate and necessary. But there is a significant difference between questioning whether travel expenses are appropriate and presenting the total cost of a multi-night stay as the cost of a single hotel night.

The report also raised questions involving KCKPS employees married to sitting Board members. KCKPS responded that the employees identified were hired through administrative processes, that two were employed by the district before their spouses joined the Board, and that the Board president’s signature on employee contracts is part of the district’s standard process.

Serious allegations involving public employees and their families deserve careful examination based on records and policy, not insinuation.

In our open letter to the  KCKPS Board of Education, we've asked that they:

  • Review the statements and conduct at issue and determine whether Board policies or governance standards were violated.
  • Take any formal accountability action authorized and warranted by the facts.
  • Call upon Dr. Winn to correct inaccurate public statements and apologize to the colleagues and families affected.
  • Establish clear expectations that allegations of misconduct be supported by verified information.
  • Refocus Board deliberations on student achievement, safety, responsible stewardship, and the resources educators need to serve students.

No public school district should be shielded from scrutiny. Families and taxpayers deserve transparency and truthful answers. They also deserve elected leaders who understand the difference between asking difficult questions and presenting unverified or inaccurate information as fact.

We call on the KCKPS Board to address these concerns publicly, uphold clear standards for responsible governance, and keep its attention where it belongs: on the students of Kansas City, Kansas.
