Demand Accessible Mental Health Assistance and Comprehensive Physicals for All Military Personnel

The Issue

I, Margie Lenz Taylor, am writing this petition to demand accessible mental health assistance and comprehensive physicals, including blood work and further testing as needed, for all branches of the military. This is a matter of utmost importance as it directly affects the well-being and lives of our brave service members.

Personal Story:
My son, Specialist Joey Lenz from Conroe, Texas (32), was serving in the United States Army at Fort Hood when tragedy struck. On February 1, 2022, Joey tragically passed away while sleeping in his barracks at Fort Hood, TX. It was later revealed that his heart was extremely enlarged. Shockingly enough, a lab report from March 17, 2021 - while Joey was in ICU at Fort Hood - indicated the presence of troponin in his blood. However, the Army medical staff failed to inform Specialist Lenz about this critical information that could have potentially saved his life.

This devastating loss could have been prevented if there had been proper annual physical examinations with blood draws conducted regularly. It is unacceptable that our military personnel are not receiving thorough medical evaluations that include necessary tests to detect potential health issues.

Mental Health Assistance:
In addition to comprehensive physical examinations with blood work and further testing as needed for all military personnel, we also demand accessible mental health assistance for our service members. Mental health issues among veterans are alarmingly high due to their exposure to traumatic events during their service.

Counseling should be provided by professionals who understand the unique challenges faced by those who serve or have served in the military. Service members must feel comfortable seeking help without fear of retribution or negative consequences on their careers.

Chart of Drug Interactions:
To ensure the safety and well-being of our military personnel, we call upon the Surgeon General's office to create a thorough chart of drug interactions. This chart should provide detailed information on potential interactions between prescribed medications, alcohol, non-prescription medications, and other substances commonly used by service members.

Investigation of Suicidal Ideations:
Furthermore, it is crucial that any suicidal ideations expressed by service members are thoroughly investigated and communicated to their chain of command and closest military peers without retribution. Early intervention can save lives, and it is our duty to protect those who protect us.

Supporting Facts:
1. According to a report by the Department of Defense Suicide Event Report (DoDSER), suicide rates among active-duty military personnel have been steadily increasing over the past decade.
2. A study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that veterans are at a higher risk of suicide compared to the general population.
3. The lack of comprehensive physical examinations has been identified as a contributing factor in delayed or missed diagnoses among military personnel.

By signing this petition, we urge the Department of Defense and all branches of the military to prioritize the health and well-being of our service members by implementing accessible mental health assistance and comprehensive physicals with blood work for all personnel. Let us honor Specialist Joey Lenz's memory by ensuring that no more lives are lost due to preventable medical conditions or inadequate mental health support within our armed forces.
