Demand A&W Restaurants to Clearly Label Their Non-Meat Options

The Issue

My friend recently visited the A&W location in Addison, IL intending to order the Beyond Burger, a meal that is expected to be free from meat based on its advertising. Despite her clear request and multiple confirmations that her meal wouldn't come with bacon, the burger was served with it. This action by A&W demonstrated not only false advertising, but it was distressing for my friend, and represents a betrayal to customers.

Moreover, this isn't a personal affair that occurred solely to my friend – this confusion may be faced daily by people looking for non-meat meals. The rising trend of plant-based dieting makes this issue even more pertinent. According to a 2020 report by Gallup, approximately 5% of the US population identifies as vegetarian, and misleading advertising may create unwanted and avoidable errors (Source: Gallup Poll). When businesses like A&W improperly label their offerings, it breakdowns trust and adds unnecessary complexity for the consumers making conscious eating choices.

We request A&W to rectify this issue urgently. If the Beyond Burger is going to continue being served with bacon, then the dish should not be advertised as a vegetarian option. The alternative is to ensure bacon is an added option, but isn't included by default. This way, consumers are clear on what they're getting when they order the Beyond Burger. If A&W chooses to market this product as a 'veggie burger', it should adhere to the standard meaning of the term – free of meat.

We hope A&W will make it right and take action immediately. Please sign this petition to urge A&W Restaurants to clarify their food options and labeling for non-meat eaters. It's a simple request for transparency and honesty.
