Demand a UK wide ban of Social Media Platform X for Fuelling Divisiveness & Disinformation
The Issue
I am a UK resident deeply concerned about the state of our country and the safety of the younger generation. I have come to understand how the unchecked circulation of information, particularly the spread of divisive narratives and unchecked facts, can have disastrous effects on society. My main concern is social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Its inability and unwillingness to fact check and moderate content makes it a breeding ground for misinformation.
The effects of these practices have been evident, including instances where public figures like Elon Musk have allegedly used the platform to create unrest. However, the platform's management has shown little to no effort to curb such activities, making it hard to ignore the platform's contribution to the negativity and divisiveness permeating the world.
As per a report by Ofcom, about 21% of UK adults use Twitter as their news source and about 40% of these users are young people aged between 18-24 years in 2020. This shows the significant influence that the platform has and the potential impact of misinformation spread on it (Source: Ofcom's 'Online Nation' report, 2020).
We're not asking for censorship, but for accountability. In an era defined by the speed and accessibility of information, it is essential that companies, especially social media giants, take responsibility for the content that they allow on their platforms. Until such accountability is assured, it might be safer to keep our society - especially the young minds who are the most vulnerable - away from the potential harm that uncensored speech can cause. Sign the petition if you agree we need to demand this change for our society's unity and security.
