Demand a State of Emergency For Animal Care in LA County and Beyond!!
The Issue
As an animal lover and a resident of Los Angeles, I’m calling on our elected officials to take immediate action to protect our furry friends. The unchecked population growth of animals in LA County and the lack of effective measures to address this issue is deeply concerning. It is imperative that immediate action is taken to prioritize spaying/neutering and breeding control. I urge LA County officials to implement the following critical demands:
- Establish accessible and fully funded spay/neuter clinics throughout the county. These clinics should operate multiple times a week to provide free or reduced-cost services, ensuring that all pet owners can afford to alter their animals. Furthermore, launch targeted community outreach campaigns to spread awareness about the importance of spaying/neutering and the availability of these clinics.
- Enforce mandatory spaying/neutering for all animals leaving shelters, without imposing additional fees. This policy must be strictly enforced to prevent unaltered animals from contributing to the existing overpopulation problem.
- Crack down on backyard breeders through stringent enforcement measures. A few months ago, the Las Vegas City Council passed an ordinance aimed at regulating and cracking down on the backyard breeding of dogs and cats. The ordinance imposes additional fees for permits and inspections of breeders' operations, and requires reporting of animal deaths or injuries requiring veterinary care. Additionally, violators will face fines and potential jail time. This is a great precedent for LA County.
- Temporarily reduce breeder licenses for overpopulated breeds, such as shepherds, huskies, and malinois. By limiting the number of breeders for these specific breeds, we can control the population growth and promote responsible breeding practices.
I implore everyone to sign and share this petition widely to emphasize the urgent need for immediate action on spaying/neutering and breeding control. By implementing these measures, we can effectively address the overpopulation crisis and improve the well-being of animals in LA County. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our beloved animals and create a more sustainable future.
