Demand a Salary Freeze for Salt Lake City Council Members

The Issue

As residents of Salt Lake City, we have lived through an increase in city sales taxes, higher utility bills, and the additional 0.05% levy for a local hockey team. Despite these growing financial burdens, we learned that some City Council Members, including Ms. Victoria Petro and Mr. Alejandro Puy, are pushing for an increase in their salaries from 25% to 35% of the Mayor's wage. This is not a momentary issue - the current salary for Council Members, a part time job, stands at $55,000 a year. This itself is an excessive amount considering the financial hardships residents face. It is discouraging that this amount is already 25% of the renewed salary of the Mayor, as mandated by City Rules. For them to suggest a rise is quite simply unacceptable and short-sighted. The financial burden posed to us, hardworking residents, by the potential decision to increase Council Members' wages is untenable. We must stand firm and decline this proposal. We call for an immediate freeze on the salaries of Salt Lake City Council Members. It's time to put the needs of the city first. Please sign this petition and protect the pocketbooks of Salt Lake City residents.
