Demand a royal commission into Tasmania's Department of Justice
The issue
For too long, we've watched in dismay as critical aspects of the Tasmanian justice system have faltered, and it's time for change. This issue is deeply personal to me, as my own investigations into several cases have revealed shocking inconsistencies in how justice is served—or often, not served. The Discharge of Prosecutions (DPP) seems to wield an alarming amount of power, often wielded ineffectively or in pursuit of opaque objectives.
Too frequently, bail is granted seemingly without due consideration of the risks posed, resulting in a revolving door of justice that ultimately hinders accountability and public safety. In particular, decisions surrounding family violence orders (FVOs) appear arbitrary, lacking the consistency needed to protect those at risk.
Perhaps most distressingly, we have encountered cases where individuals with a known history of predatory behavior are permitted to volunteer, posing an ongoing threat to the community. It’s as though the systemic inefficiencies and misallocations of responsibility at the leadership level are generating more harm than good. Tasmanian police, doing their best to uphold law and order, are being let down by a leadership that seems disconnected from the reality of the crises they face every day.
These issues are not minor nor isolated; they are symptoms of a deeper malaise within the Department of Justice that can only be conclusively examined and rectified through a Royal Commission. Such an inquiry would provide the transparency needed to hold those in power accountable, analyze procedural failures, and implement necessary reforms aimed at safeguarding our justice system's integrity.
We need strong, systemic change that aligns judicial responsibility with public safety and justice. It’s high time the leadership within the Department showed genuine, unwavering commitment to these ideals.
Please join in calling for an independent Royal Commission to scrutinize the Department of Justice in Tasmania. Our leaders need to hear that we will not abide by further neglect or mishandling of justice. Sign this petition to demand accountability and integrity in our justice system for a safer, fairer Tasmania.
