Demand a Review and Stronger Sentence for LeShon Johnson in Dog Fighting Case
The Issue
On September 10, 2026, former NFL player LeShon Johnson was sentenced to 60 months — ONLY five years — in federal prison after being convicted at trial on six dog-fighting-related charges.
This was not an isolated incident.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Johnson had previously pleaded guilty to Oklahoma dog-fighting offenses in 2004. Despite that conviction, authorities say he continued operating a large-scale dog-fighting enterprise for years, breeding and trafficking hundreds of dogs for the purpose of fighting.
Authorities seized 190 dogs from his property, the largest number of dogs ever seized from a single individual in a federal dog-fighting case.
The evidence presented at trial reportedly showed that Johnson bred and sold dogs from fighting bloodlines, advertised dogs as “champions” and “grand champions” based on their fighting records, and collected money from puppy sales and breeding fees. The DOJ described the operation as a business that promoted and profited from animal cruelty.
And yet, after years of continued criminal conduct following his earlier dog-fighting conviction, the sentence imposed was ONLY FIVE YEARS in federal prison.
Five years is not enough.
We are asking the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, federal prosecutors, and other appropriate authorities to review this case and determine whether every lawful avenue exists to seek a stronger sentence or otherwise hold Johnson fully accountable for the scale, duration, and repeated nature of his crimes.
Dog fighting is not a minor offense. It is deliberate, organized animal cruelty in which dogs are bred, trained, sold, and forced to injure one another for profit and entertainment.
When someone has already been convicted of dog-fighting offenses and later continues operating another large-scale dog-fighting enterprise involving hundreds of animals, we believe that history and the extraordinary scale of the operation deserve the strongest lawful response available.
Five years should not be the end of the conversation.
