Defend Religious Freedom. Demand Action Against Mayor Elect Mamdani

Introduction

We, the undersigned residents of New York and citizens of the United States, demand immediate action at every level of government regarding the conduct and statements of New York City Mayor Elect Zohran Mamdani. His public reaction to the November 19 protest outside Park East Synagogue, and his inflammatory accusation that the synagogue “used sacred spaces to promote activities in violation of international law,” represent a dangerous distortion of fact, a failure of leadership, and a direct act of victim blaming directed at the Jewish community.

What Happened at Park East Synagogue
On November 19, 2025, video footage widely circulated across news outlets and social platforms shows approximately 200 protestors surrounding Park East Synagogue during a community event hosted by Nefesh B’Nefesh, a nonprofit organization that helps American Jews immigrate to Israel.

The videos show men, women, and children attempting to enter their house of worship while protestors physically blocked the steps, surrounded congregants, and shouted antisemitic chants including “Globalize the intifada,” “Death to the IDF,” and “Take another settler out.”

The New York Police Department failed to create a frozen zone or secure path to the entrance and later publicly apologized for the botched response. Despite clear visual evidence of harassment and obstruction of religious freedom, Mayor Elect Mamdani did not condemn the perpetrators.

Mamdani’s False Accusation Against the Jewish Community
Instead of denouncing an aggressive mob that targeted a synagogue, Mamdani directed criticism toward the synagogue and its congregants, asserting that the Jewish community had misused a sacred space to promote activities that violated international law. This is false. Listening to a nonprofit that assists American Jews in immigrating to Israel is lawful, legitimate, and consistent with the rights of free people everywhere.

The Jewish Right to Return
Jewish history and lived experience justify the decolonization of the Land of Israel back into the modern State of Israel. Israel is the reconstituted homeland of the Jewish people following millennia of persecution, expulsion, and genocide. It is the ancestral homeland of the Jewish people and has been inhabited by Jews continuously for more than 3,000 years.

The return of Jews to Israel is not colonization. It is the reversal of colonization. It is an indigenous people reclaiming their historic homeland. Organizations that assist Jews in making aliyah uphold this right and operate fully within the bounds of international law. Mamdani’s claim to the contrary aligns with propaganda used to delegitimize Jewish indigenous rights and to dismantle the foundation of Western democratic values.

A Dangerous Failure of Leadership
Mamdani’s refusal to unequivocally condemn antisemitic intimidation and obstruction of a synagogue entrance is unacceptable. His deflection of blame onto the Jewish community mirrors a pattern of rhetoric that increasingly normalizes antisemitic narratives in public life. This raises urgent concerns about his fitness to lead the largest Jewish city in the world.

Our Demands
We, the people, therefore demand immediate action at every level of government.

Federal Government
The United States Congress must issue a formal condemnation of Zohran Mamdani’s statements and his handling of the Park East Synagogue incident.
The United States Senate must join the House of Representatives in censure and initiate inquiries into violations of the civil rights of the Jewish community and the obstruction of religious freedom.

State Government
The New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly must issue a joint resolution condemning Mamdani’s rhetoric and calling for full accountability.
State leadership must explore all available legal mechanisms regarding recall, removal, or disqualification from office.

City Government
The New York City Council must recognize that the people of New York have lost confidence in Mamdani’s ability to protect Jewish New Yorkers and must formally support a vote of no confidence.
The Council must also examine failures of city leadership and public safety operations that allowed congregants to be blocked from entering a house of worship.

The People
We, the citizens of New York City, call for an immediate Recall Election as Mayor Elect Zohran Mamdani is clearly biased and unfit to serve.
We affirm that no leader who excuses or rationalizes the obstruction and intimidation of Jews at a synagogue can ethically or credibly serve as mayor of New York City.

Conclusion
New York City deserves a leader who protects all communities without hesitation and without prejudice. The events at Park East Synagogue were not ambiguous. They were recorded on video. They show a targeted act of harassment directed at Jews on the steps of their house of worship. Mamdani’s response did not meet the standard of leadership expected of a mayor of this city.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THIS WAS YOUR HOUSE OF WORSHIP BEING BLOCKED?  AND THEN CONDEMNED BY THE MAYOR ELECT?
