The Issue

This petition emanates from a deeply personal concern for the Isle of Man's pristine beauty and delicate ecosystem. As a resident of this beautiful island, I and many others believe the proposed installation of a wind farm is the wrong approach in dealing with our energy problems. As it stands, the proposed wind farm will drastically alter the landscape, visible across the entirety of the southern side of our island, spoiling our cherished view. Additionally, it poses a considerable threat to the local wildlife, whose survival could be jeopardized on an annual basis.

It's not only the immediate consequences that worry us. Once its service life has expired, this wind turbine assembly is unrecyclable and will have to be buried, adding an environmental burden that future generations will have to deal with.

The British Trust for Ornithology reports that up to 300,000 birds die each year due to wind turbines in the UK, emphasizing the risk wind farms pose to wildlife, and consequently, biodiversity (BTO, 2019). Furthermore, a study in Applied Energy states that wind turbines lose 1.6% of their efficiency per year, making them a less productive investment over time, and with material limitations preventing recycling, the environmental implications are far-reaching (University of Edinburgh, 2019).

It's vital that we consider these factors and explore alternative energy solutions that are in harmony with our environment and long-term sustainable goals. Hence, this petition appeals to the Isle of Man government to call for a public referendum on the installation of the wind farm. Allow the voices of those directly impacted by these actions to be heard. Please sign this petition if you too believe in preserving the natural charm of our home and safeguarding the ecosystem for future generations.
