MARINACCIO (3 GMS) AND STAMMEN (1 GM) BOTH SUSPENDED AFTER GUNNAR GETS HBP

Major League Baseball (MLB) has suspended San Diego Padres reliever Ron Marinaccio for three games and manager Craig Stammen for one game following an intentional hit-by-pitch incident involving Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson.

The Incident & Ejections
The HBP: In the ninth inning of Saturday's game, Marinaccio hit Henderson in the hip with a 93.9 mph fastball.
The Ejections: Umpires immediately ejected Marinaccio. Stammen was also ejected after a heated argument with second-base umpire Chris Conroy.

Retaliation Motives
The incident appeared to be retaliation for two prior events in the series:
Bogaerts Hit: In the fifth inning, Orioles rookie Trey Gibson accidentally hit Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts in the head with a 93.5 mph sinker, forcing him out of the game.
Inside Pitches: In the seventh inning, Padres pitcher Bradgley Rodriguez threw two high, inside pitches that forced Henderson to dodge out of the way.

Team Responses
The Orioles: Henderson believed the Padres were seeking payback but noted the teams are now "even". Manager Craig Albernaz agreed Gibson's pitch was accidental but felt the situation was handled properly.
The Padres: Both Marinaccio and Stammen denied intent, claiming they were simply trying to pitch inside to disrupt Henderson's rhythm.

Suspension Details
Stammen's Status: Served his suspension on Monday, June 15, while bench coach Randy Knorr acted as manager against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Marinaccio's Appeal: He has appealed the three-game suspension, allowing him to continue playing until MLB makes a final determination.
