The Issue

Clark County commissioners sat down Tuesday to discuss the explosion of data centers being built across the Las Vegas Valley. Community members lined up to speak. Environmental advocates rallied outside. And when it was over, the commission took no action.

That's not good enough.

Data centers are consuming massive amounts of water and energy in one of the driest regions in the country. Ordinary Nevadans are restricted from watering their lawns on certain days — fined for using too much. Meanwhile, data centers keep expanding, fueled by hundreds of millions of dollars in tax abatements, with no uniform standards, no pause, and no plan.

Reno has already placed a moratorium on new data center approvals. So have multiple other jurisdictions nationwide. They did it to create space to evaluate the impact and set real standards before approving more. Clark County commissioners heard that argument on Tuesday and walked away without committing to anything.

Olivia Tanager, Director of the Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter, said it plainly: "In order to effectively evaluate and correct this really huge issue, the county and other jurisdictions need to execute moratoria while evaluating."

The community showed up. The commissioners need to act.

Sign this petition to demand the Clark County Commission immediately pause new data center approvals and develop enforceable, uniform standards before any more are built in our valley.
