The Issue

As a proud alumna of Ridge Spring-Monetta High School, I never imagined I’d be in a position to publicly question the very district that helped shape me. But today, I feel it’s necessary—not out of anger, but out of a desire to see fairness, equity, and student excellence truly honored.

A current student at RS-M High is facing an unjust situation. By the end of the 2025–2026 school year, he will have completed all high school requirements and earned several college credits. He has maintained a weighted GPA of 5.11, the highest in his class—yet, due to Aiken County Public School District’s IKA policy, he is being denied eligibility for Valedictorian simply because he is graduating early.

Let’s be clear: this is not about handing out honors freely. This student has done the work. He has met every requirement. He didn’t transfer in or take shortcuts—he simply chose to challenge himself and finish early. To deny him this recognition solely based on timing, not merit, is both disheartening and harmful.

Some have expressed concerns that early graduates may negatively impact class rankings, potentially affecting scholarships for others. That’s a valid point and deserves consideration. But this isn’t about removing opportunity from one student to benefit another. It’s about making sure policies reflect the full picture—and that students who go above and beyond are not punished for doing so.

Our school district serves thousands of students. Without thoughtful advocacy, those students can quickly be reduced to numbers on a spreadsheet rather than individuals with unique goals, talents, and achievements. That’s why schools mustbe the voice for their students, especially when policies are outdated or too rigid to serve their best interests.

I’m calling on Aiken County Public School District to revisit and revise the IKA policy. The current language disqualifies deserving students simply because they didn’t follow the traditional four-year high school path. This isn’t just about one student—it’s about fairness, recognition, and the values we say we uphold in public education.

Let’s advocate for a policy that celebrates hard work, not punishes it. Sign this petition to demand change. Our students deserve nothing less.
