The Issue

AFGE Local 62 elections have not been held transparently and are rarely contested. Now that there's opposition pushing for reform with strong support, the current leadership is violating rules to favor the incumbents.

Members and supporters are calling for immediate national intervention to protect union democracy. The current election process violates federal law, AFGE’s own rules, and members’ basic rights. With mounting evidence of procedural misconduct and blatant retaliation, we urge AFGE National to step in, ensure a fair election, and restore transparency and accountability to Local 62.

We, the undersigned, are calling on the National President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) to immediately intervene and ensure a fair, transparent, and lawful election at AFGE Local 62 (representing DLA in Philadelphia).

Election Misconduct and Violations of Federal and Union Law

The current Local 62 election process has been riddled with serious violations of the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA), Local 62 Bylaws, and the AFGE Election Manual.

Both members and candidates have reported numerous instances of misconduct, including:

  • Failure to elect a proper Election Committee as required by Local 62’s bylaws.
  • Holding nominations in August, instead of in October as established by the Local’s bylaws.
  • Imposing illegal deadlines and limits to distribution of campaign material.
  • Restricting or censoring members’ right to campaign and distribute materials, in violation of the LMRDA’s guarantee of equal access and free expression.

These actions are clear violations of members’ federally protected rights to a fair and democratic union election under Title IV of the LMRDA.

Local 62 members deserve a process that is transparent, impartial, and free from manipulation. Anything less erodes confidence in our union and undermines the core principles of AFGE democracy.

A Pattern of Abuse and Lack of Accountability

These electoral issues are not isolated incidents. Members who question leadership are ignored or punished, while those in power manipulate rules to maintain control and conceal misconduct.

Our Demands

We, the members and concerned public, call on AFGE National to:

  1. Immediately intervene to re-conduct the Local 62 election under neutral and independent third-party supervision.
  2. Investigate all election-related complaints for violations of the LMRDA, AFGE Election Manual, and Local Bylaws.
  3. Notify ALL eligible employees of these concerns and notify them prior to the election date with instructions on how to register for the union and vote in the elections.
  4. Protect all members and candidates from retaliation for exercising their rights to free speech, participation, and oversight.
