Stop using styrofoam cups on flights

Stop using styrofoam cups on flights

The Issue

Delta Airlines touts that they are committed to reducing their environmental footprint and "flying greener skies."

But order a cup of coffee on a flight and you'll be handed polystyrene (aka Styrofoam). (One Delta flight attendant said Delta has been using the "exact same cups" for 30 years.)

So get with the green times, Delta. This eco-step is easy! (Even McDonalds has committed to making the change.)

According to Earth Resource Foundation, polystyrene is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the EPA. Made from petroleum, polystyrene is non-sustainable; products made from it will never, ever truly break down. The manufacturing of polystyrene releases chemicals causing acute and long-term health problems for workers while the process pollutes the air and produces excessive amounts of waste. Polystyrene can leach toxic chemicals especially when heated or used with hot food or liquids (like coffee!).

Alternatives abound. Cups made from recycled and sustainably sourced paper are strong, cost-effective and biodegradable.

So come on, Delta, fly the talk! Commit to replacing polystyrene cups with a more people and planet-friendly alternative today.

Your customers will thank you.
