Tell Georgia’s Business Community: Reject Voter Suppression Bills
The Issue
Georgia is facing the worst attack on voting rights since Reconstruction, with over 50 bills advancing in our state legislature that would roll back every aspect of voting access. Some of the worst of these bills: SB 67, a repeal of automatic voter registration; SB 71, a repeal of no-excuse absentee voting; HB 531, an anti-voting omnibus that includes a ban on external grants and severely restricting weekend voting; and SB 241, yet another omnibus bill that would add new photo ID requirements and allow for state takeovers of county election offices.
Together, these bills represent an assault on the fundamental rights of Georgians, fueled by conspiracy theories that have already led to violence and insurrection in our nation’s capital. Additionally, these bills carry incredible costs that will be passed onto counties and taxpayers: just HB 531 and SB 241 combined would create over $30 million in county costs. With local governments already struggling from the public health emergency of COVID-19, these bills would truly devastate our state’s economy.
As leading members of the business community, we as Georgians are asking you to take a stand and protect our fundamental right to vote. Georgia has too often been known for voter suppression - it’s time for our state to reject these harmful and costly policies. Your voices can add new urgency to this fight, and show our legislature that the right to vote must not be threatened.
