Protect Standing Forests in the Amazon

This December is the 20th session of the United Nations climate negotiations (UNFCCC COP 20). This conference is a precursor for COP 21 in Paris, 2015, in which the objective is to achieve a binding and universal agreement on climate from all countries. COP 20 is critically important to the future of climate action in its goal to draft the agreement that will be adopted in 2015. With the conference taking place not far from the heart of the Amazon rainforest in Lima, Peru this year is an opportune time to petition our global leaders for the inclusion of standing forests in the forefront of developing effective climate change policy.
The Amazon is one of the most important land ecosystems for mitigating the effects of climate change. It moderates weather patterns locally and globally, carries 20% of the planet's fresh water to the ocean, holds more that 30% of all species in the world, and is the home to thousands of indigenous tribes. Some experts say that at the current rate of destruction the Amazon will be gone in 40 years.
Our window of opportunity to preserve the lungs of the planet is closing with each passing day. This petition is a global voice to ask the delegates to COP 20, if you could protect the world's greatest forest, would you?
