The Issue

Growing up in Lake County, Indiana, I’ve witnessed the unique blend of natural beauty and community-driven economic growth that has defined our region. Now, both of these are under threat from the proposed construction of a massive data center. This isn't merely a concern about aesthetics or change; it’s about preserving the quality of life and the environment that makes Lake County special.

The proposed site for this data center is perched near important ecological zones that are home to diverse wildlife. The large-scale construction would inevitably disrupt these habitats. Studies have shown that data centers can have significant environmental impacts, including increased carbon emissions and substantial water usage for cooling systems.

Beyond the environmental concerns, there's a worry about the center's effect on our local economy. While data centers provide some employment opportunities, they often do not offer the breadth and diversity of jobs that stimulate local economies. They attract short-term construction positions, but long-term positions are few and often specialized, leaving minimal scope for the employment of local residents.

Furthermore, property values in the surrounding areas could face a downturn due to the construction, which is often seen as an eyesore. Many longtime residents who have invested in their properties might see their property values depreciate.

It’s crucial that before any such project continues, we undertake a comprehensive impact assessment, focusing on both our environment and economy. We do not want to stop progress but rather ensure that any development aligns with the sustainable growth goals our community cherishes.

I am calling on local authorities and stakeholders to delay or stop the development of this data center until we can be sure it benefits, rather than detracts from, Lake County's interests. Let's prioritize projects that truly add value to our community, preserve our environment, and contribute to economic diversity.
