Overcrowding relief for Dunwoody Elementary

Overcrowding relief for Dunwoody Elementary
The Issue
Board of Education Members and Interim Superintendent Tyson,
1) The recommended redistricting plan presented by DCSD Superintendent Ramona Tyson on 1/13/2020 is inadequate in addressing the immediate and severe elementary overcrowding in the Dunwoody cluster. This plan does not adhere to the DCSD primary redistricting criteria.
2) The superintendent recommendation puts a disproportionate burden of both immediate and short-term overcrowding on Dunwoody Elementary, an elementary school which is both overcrowded and has the most projected growth within the Dunwoody cluster.
3) Additional relief beyond the tiny area recommended in the 1/13/2020 plan is critical to minimize the impact on shared spaces (cafeteria, playgrounds, gym, parking, carpool, etc) as well as improve the safety and instructional capacity of students at DES.
4) The disproportionate overcrowding is unnecessary when Austin Elementary is expected to open with empty seats in the fall of 2020.
5) Please solve this problem by filling Austin Elementary to capacity on day 1. This will distribute the burden of overcrowding and future growth of the Dunwoody cluster to multiple schools.
6) To accomplish this, we propose moving additional children west of Ashford Dunwoody Road from DES to Austin, an area which is in closer proximity to Austin. This adheres to all three DCSD primary redistricting criteria.
Please take action on this plan before overcrowding becomes a bigger crisis.
Thank you.
