The Issue

I am writing this petition out of genuine frustration and disappointment with the 988 national crisis line. Over the course of numerous interactions, I have faced continuous dismissive behavior from the hotline operators who seem to be more interested in pushing their own narrative rather than truly listening and understanding the crisis situations that callers are facing. My experiences have repeatedly shown that the staff lacks empathy, are uninformed, and often give unhelpful, even harmful, advice.

For someone who is seeking immediate help, reaching out to a crisis line is an act of courage and vulnerability. Imagine, at your most vulnerable, being met with unempathetic responses, told you are wrong, and not feeling heard at all. This has been my reality, a repeated cycle of seeking aid and leaving each call feeling worse, doubted, and invalidated.

Crisis lines like 988 have an essential responsibility: to offer support, empathy, and a lifeline to those in their darkest moments. However, when these lines fail in their core purpose, it's time to rethink their funding and effectiveness. The current state of 988 not only fails to provide adequate support but may further endanger the mental health of the callers instead of aiding them.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, highlighting the urgent need for effective crisis interventions. But a crisis line that performs inadequately can exacerbate the issue rather than mitigate it. This is not just my personal struggle; countless others have shared similar experiences online, voicing their feelings of neglect and frustration.

I am asking that we defund 988 and redirect our resources toward more effective mental health solutions. We should be investing in crisis services that are actually prepared to deal with the complexities of mental health emergencies. This might include increased training for operators, hiring professionals with lived experience in mental health crises, or investing in local community-led initiatives that have a proven track record of success.

If we fail to hold crisis lines accountable for their shortcomings, we risk leaving countless individuals without the crucial help they desperately need. It's time for change. Stand with me in advocating for better mental health support.

Please sign this petition to call for the defunding of the 988 national crisis line in favor of better, more responsive mental health resources.
