Defund road maintenance in Cumberland, MD for transit alternatives
The Issue
I was tricked into buying a car at 16 and was never allowed to drive because young people are discriminated against by car insurance companies. This experience ignited my passion for creating a more inclusive and accessible transportation system in Cumberland, MD—a community where many residents can't afford or simply choose not to own a car.
In Cumberland, public funds are largely going toward maintaining roads that primarily serve tourists, people from out of town, and older people who can often afford to drive. This allocation of resources doesn't adequately serve the needs of residents who live here year-round, especially those who face higher transportation costs. Instead of pouring our tax dollars into endless road maintenance, we should invest in transportation systems that are more affordable, efficient, and accessible for local residents.
Consider the enormous benefits of reallocating a portion of transportation funding toward a network of lightweight railcars and dedicated go-kart infrastructure. These systems could provide practical, low-cost transportation for everyday trips while using less space, consuming less energy, and costing less to operate than traditional automobiles. Dedicated routes would improve safety by separating these vehicles from regular traffic and could make it easier for people of all ages to get around the city without relying on a full-size car.
Cities around the world have demonstrated that investing in innovative transportation infrastructure can improve mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and strengthen local economies. Cumberland has the opportunity to become a pioneer in next-generation transportation by embracing new ideas instead of relying exclusively on car-centered infrastructure.
We have the opportunity to reshape Cumberland's future. By directing more transportation funding toward lightweight railcar systems and dedicated go-kart pathways, we can build a transportation network that is more affordable, more accessible, and better suited to the needs of Cumberland residents. Let's make our voices heard and encourage local leaders to explore innovative transportation solutions for our community.
Sign this petition to urge local government officials to reevaluate our current transportation funding priorities and invest in railcar and go-kart infrastructure for Cumberland, MD. Together, we can build a more innovative, inclusive, and sustainable future for our city.
