DEFUND LVMPD!

DEFUND LVMPD!
The Issue
The appalling actions displayed by the LVMPD amongst the outbreak of Black Lives Matter protests has set a clear divide between the citizens of Las Vegas and those who are supposed to protect us. The LVMPD has been caught on video abusing their power against the Las Vegas protestors, stripping them of their constitutional and human rights. The police department is supposed to allow the people to exercise their First Amendment rights and keep the people safe. Police brutality has only increased since the protests began, proving to us that the police are not on our side. As of right now, the LVMPD budget for FY19/20 is $631,964,702 and represents an increase of $30,892,504 or 5.14% over the FY18/19 budget. Comparing these numbers to the $37.8 million budget CUT that the Clark County school district is facing shows the priorities of our city. Additionally, the Health budget for 2020 is $8,555,786. The utter disproportion of the tax payers funds needs to be fixed immediately. The city of Las Vegas needs to make a change and redistribute the funds by at LEAST $200-300 million. These funds need to go toward our schools, homeless population, infrastructure, hospitals, etc. We demand change, and we CAN defund the police. As citizens of Las Vegas, we need to come together to allow our voices to be heard and put our hard earned money toward sectors of the city’s budget that will enhance the lives of our society, not take them away like the LVMPD has done.
