Defund and ban ICE from Washington State
The Issue
A recent ICE raid in Western Washington on Labor Day Weekend showed us a Sanctuary State Status means nothing, when we stand by and watch. At Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest (Red Bridge Campground), 5 Washington families were confronted while camping and the fathers taken into custody. The women and children were left to wonder where the men were taken. U.S. Forest Rangers present were responsible for calling ICE and assisting them. ICE is out of control and terrorizing people in this country.
In Washington, a state that proudly wears its Sanctuary State status, the continued operation of ICE facilities, particularly in Tacoma, runs counter to the moral fabric we have chosen to weave. The presence of ICE not only undermines our collective efforts to offer sanctuary but also perpetuates fear and division among communities that should be thriving in their diversity and unity.
The Tacoma ICE facility, with its history of human rights abuses, must be closed immediately. It stands as a monument to the systemic oppression that we claim to stand against. No one can turn a blind eye anymore; the lack of action is a silent endorsement of discrimination and inhumanity. The influence and budget of ICE must be revoked within our state, enabling us to channel local resources towards community-building initiatives instead.
