Trump has done it. Before a group of fishermen he announced the opening of  the only Marine National Monument in the Atlantic, protecting endangered right whales, deep sea corals and recovering fish populations taking refuge from commercial harvest. Following a similar action opening the Bear's Ears and Staircase Escalante National Monuments in Utah for mining and deforestation- nearly two million acres of federal public lands that hold incomparable archaeological, paleontological, cultural, and natural significance.

Sued by environmental groups, and currently in federal court, the suit  claims President Trump has neither constitutional nor statutory authority to dismantle national monuments.

Each week Shark Stewards holds live Facebook events on Fridays to advocate for shark and marine protection. We announced a new Hope Spot for Timor Leste and increasing protection in the ocean to achieve the 30% protection for the under the goals set under the  UN Convention of Biological Diversity in 2020.

Shark Stewards is discussing what marine protected areas are and why the world needs them.

We are also building public support to fight for the hard-fought national marine monuments we have in place- and not protect less.

With Earth Island Institute, Shark Stewards is mounting a legal defense to protect the Pacific Marine National Monuments from fishing.
