                                     Oppose Bill 23-17

Defend the Montgomery County Fair & Agriculture in Montgomery County Maryland.

Bill 23-17 concerning Animal Control – Performance Animal Violations, is being proposed by the Human Society of the United States to the Montgomery County Council. The Board of Directors for the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair unanimously opposes this Bill for the following reasons:

This Bill will prevent certain licensed animal shows from preforming in Montgomery County Maryland.

Draft Letter:

To: Montgomery County Council

From: (Insert your name here)

Regarding: Bill 23-17

I oppose Bill 23-17 Animal Control-Performance Wild or Exotic Animal-Violations, and recommend that the Montgomery County Council continue to permit performances by licensed, registered and inspected animal shows that are in compliance with animal cruelty as well as safety laws and regulations that are currently in place.

The Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds relies on rental income and providing unique educational shows and attractions throughout the year and during the county Fair. Passage of Bill 23-17 by Montgomery County will most likely be followed for passage by the City of Gaithersburg as well. When passage by the City occurs, these business and educational activities will become illegal.

We should not eliminate access to educational experiences of animals that are provided by licensed exhibitors in Montgomery County. This would take away affordable and educational opportunities for residents in Montgomery who lack the income and resources to travel and learn about some of the world's most iconic animals.

I encourage the Montgomery County Department of Animal Control to continue to maintain the high standard of excellence that has been established during the inspection process when these shows are operating in Montgomery County.
