Defend Our Privacy – Stop the GDPR Rollback!
Le problème
As leaked in recent days, the European Commission is secretly preparing a sweeping reform of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) under the so‑called Digital Omnibus. What was initially presented as a technical simplification for businesses now threatens to dismantle the very foundations of European privacy law.
The leaked draft reveals alarming proposals:
- Redefining what counts as personal data, weakening protections across the board.
- Curtailing the rights of every data subject under the GDPR.
- Granting AI giants like Google, Meta, or OpenAI a blank check to exploit Europeans’ personal data.
- Reducing safeguards for sensitive information such as health data, political opinions, or sexual orientation.
- Allowing remote access to personal data on PCs and smartphones without user consent.
- Overturning established case law of the Court of Justice of the EU and undermining the European Charter of Fundamental Rights.
This reform would mark a massive downgrading of privacy protections, just ten years after the GDPR was adopted as a global gold standard. Instead of defending citizens’ rights, the Commission risks turning Europe into a puppet theatre where geopolitical interests pull the strings, while our fundamental freedoms are sacrificed.
We call on the European Commission, the European Parliament, and national governments to:
- Reject any attempt to weaken the GDPR.
- Uphold the primacy of fundamental rights over corporate or foreign interests.
- Ensure that the Digital Omnibus remains a tool for simplification, not a Trojan horse for dismantling privacy.
Privacy is not negotiable.
We demand transparency, accountability, and the protection of our fundamental rights.
