DEFEND OUR FELLOW LUMADS, UPHOLD HUMAN RIGHTS AND ABOLISH MILITARIZATION!
The Issue
A Petition to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Eradicate These Crises
With the ongoing conflict felt throughout the country, particularly severe on the island of region Mindanao, where the Lumad people have been forced to leave their way of life, tied up to their ancestor land, which deprives legal processes, human rights, and the Philippine constitution.
What violations have been deprived from Lumads?
1. Military is driving them from their land.
Most Lumads live in remote areas, which serve as the possession of the military against NPA. Military forces the Lumad people to evacuate and drive them away from their land, thus they sometimes remain in displacement for days or weeks; at times they are unable to return for months. Many leave behind not only their homes and their possession, but their fields and their ancestral domains, which adds to the pain of departure and no doubt hastens the desire to return.
2. Big corporations attempt to displace them for ECONOMIC INTEREST.
When displaced, their lands are slowly stolen, and fields often become neglected, leading to crop losses and failures. Their homes are looted and destroyed during the fighting, and on returning, they are forced to rebuild from scratch. This cycle of violence and displacement is eroding their asset base and driving them deeper into poverty.
3. Government is TARGETING them.
The government is targeting them because of their strong resistance against forceful possession of their lands especially aggressive commercial exploitation by multinational mining corporations with an eye on profit. However, the attacks have increased since martial law was declared by President Duterte. On the contrary, martial law did not improve their state, and it only caused Mindanao to be filled with Lumad evacuees.
4. Their schools are SHUTTERED.
Their schools where they learn their indigenous traditions are attacked in favor of mainstream curriculum that doesn’t honor their way of life. Also, the teachers are executed, which causes exploitation and miserably treatment of the youth.
How do Lumad people fight them?
In spite of these prevailing issues, together, let us fight oppression and sign this petition toward farmers, workers, and Lumads to convey their voices of crises to the world and bring their complaints to the government and respond intentionally. Your voice might be powerful enough to address these issues; to save lives, and preserve human rights.
We thus call on President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and all government officials to address these issues. We believe that these ongoing crises have given a big impact on the Lumads environment which deprives their legal rights. Thus, we need the best for our fellow indigenous people; Stop discrimination and institute a law that carries indigenous people’s fair justice system, judgment, and treatment that will help to diminish the crises. Thus, for them to be able to break the cycle and live in peace and dignity. We would also like to include:
- The safety of Lumad people against military forces.
- Fair treatment and fair justice for the indigenous people.
- Complete access to their agricultural machinery and land.
- Full implementation of House Bill No. 555 or the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill.
- Benefits and subsidies for the Lumads.
WE, THE FILIPINO PEOPLE WILL CONTINUE TO DEFEND OUR FELLOW LUMADS, UPHOLD HUMAN RIGHTS AND ABOLISH MILITARIZATION!
