Defend Central Bucks Students’ Freedom to Learn

The Issue

The signers of this petition want the Central Bucks School Board majority to stop limiting our kids’ education with divisive strategies and policies, by fostering safe and inclusive learning environments and protecting the freedom of speech and expression in the classroom.

This year, CBSD students, families and educators have been subjected to the narrowly held views of the board majority with policies that seek to restrict books and materials in libraries & classrooms, create barriers to comprehensive, age appropriate sex education, and perpetuate a hostile and fearful learning environment for many.

We ask the Central Bucks School Board to uphold the CBSD mission:

“The Central Bucks Schools will provide all students with the academic and problem solving skills essential for personal development, responsible citizenship, and life long learning” by taking the following steps:

The signers of this petition urge the Central Bucks School Board majority to commit to policies that protect the rights of students and educators.

We believe all children need access to an honest and equitable education. One that gives them the freedom to learn, to think, and to connect curriculum to real life. We know this is what prepares our children to work, lead, and succeed in a diverse world.

We believe in an educational environment that is welcoming and inclusive, because we know our kids learn best in environments with low fear and high trust.

We believe that successful public schools are places where students are exposed to a wide variety of views, and teachers are trusted to navigate the issues, create a climate of inquiry, and encourage not the adoption of specific points of view, but the critical thinking stance of curiosity and courage.

We believe that students must decide for themselves what they wish to read outside of curricular, assigned books, and that parents can and should guide their own children to titles they deem appropriate.

We believe that our professional educators have the preparation and wisdom to teach with professionalism, balancing viewpoints and creating learning communities within their classrooms.

We believe that teachers’ job is to teach, parents’ job is to parent, and the school board’s job is to govern, and not micromanage the professionals that they hire to take care of the day to day business of the district.
