✊ Defend Borikén’s Sacred Wildlife: Justice for the Coquí and Our Island!

Puerto Rico — known to its Indigenous people as Borikén — is under attack, not just by hurricanes and colonization, but now by a wave of entitled tourists who are actively complaining about, harming, and even killing our sacred wildlife, particularly the coquí, a species of frog legally protected by environmental laws and sacred to our culture.

Visitors have posted online about “getting rid of the frogs,” and some even promote ways to silence or exterminate them. This is illegal, environmentally destructive, and culturally offensive.

 
We Demand:
Immediate investigation and prosecution of any individual who harms protected species, especially the coquí and native reptiles.
Mandatory environmental disclosures by short-term rental platforms and property owners.

Removal of listings and suspension of hosts who enable environmental harm.

Clear policy enforcement by social media platforms against content promoting eco-violence.

Public education campaigns teach visitors about the ecological laws of Puerto Rico.

Greater accountability from airlines and tourism boards for colonial-style marketing that misrepresents Borikén as a “party island” rather than a living Indigenous homeland.
 
Why This Matters:
The coquí is more than just a frog — it is a national symbol, a spiritual guardian, and a vital part of Borikén’s ecosystem.
To silence the coquí is to silence our ancestors, our culture, and our future.
