Defend access to puberty blockers and protect trans lives
The Issue
Many will have watched in horror as the news of Mike Nesbitt, the health care secretary, was given the green light by Michelle O'Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly to officially ban access to puberty blockers for trans youth NI late August. This ban is devastating for Trans and non-binary people. It means in reality denying access to life saving care, and will do irreparable damage.
Firstly, it should be noted where the bans on puberty blockers came from; a flawed review known as the Cass review that involved trans exclusionary figures and disregarded all evidence on the positive effects of puberty blockers. The report gave legitimacy to TERF and far-right fear-mongering about the trans teens. Packed within this report is a suspicion of the possibility of young people being able to question their gender, a damaging aspect of the report for young trans people.
But this ban is also part of a series of political attacks against Trans people by both the UK and now Stormont government. A culture war is being purposely whipped up around Trans people, we've pulled some information together to address the misinformation on which the Cass review and this intentional attack on Trans people is based: myth busting the Cass report and the transphobic ban on puberty blockers
Please show your solidarity and help prevent avoidable deaths of trans teens by suicide by signing this petition, we demand that:
- The Stormont executive reverses this ban on puberty blockers immediately
- Expand services for people of all ages to ensure easily accessible trans healthcare on the NHS across all of Northern Ireland
- Open a free walk in NHS clinic for blood testing for those receiving hormone treatment
- Abolish the fee for a gender recognition act certificate
