Deer ramps NEED to be put in along the canal!
The Issue
Hi I’m Kay, I’m a resident living in Astley, who enjoys the simple pleasure of walking my dogs along the canal (getting on near The Old Boat House pub) walking towards Leigh. It's a place where nature thrives and the wildlife is just so special even spotting my first kingfisher 💕 However, this idyllic scene has led to tragic incidents that I have witnessed on multiple occasions - young deer drowning in the canal due to high sides that prevent them from escaping. Despite my best efforts to rescue them, it’s just not enough :( I’ve also been part of rescuing a horse & a hedgehog too whom unlike the deer swam to me & allowed me to scoop him to safety.
The sight of these innocent creatures struggling for life is heartbreaking and has driven me to take action. Deer are an essential part of our local ecosystem and their loss affects us all. According to British Deer Society estimates, there are over 1 million wild deer in the UK (source: British Deer Society). These animals deserve a chance at survival when they accidentally fall into canals.
I propose that we implement deer ramps along this stretch of canal - a simple solution that could save countless lives. These ramps would provide an escape route for not only deer but other wildlife as well who find themselves trapped in similar situations.
This issue may seem small compared with global problems but it's one we can solve right here in our community. Let's give our local wildlife a fighting chance against unforeseen dangers by implementing these lifesaving ramps.
Please sign this petition if you believe every creature deserves compassion and safety within its natural habitat. I’ll be on the canal on Saturday 18th May from 9am with my petition so if you can’t sign online please come down & show your support :) You can’t miss me I’ll be dressed as a deer 😂 near the bike track x Thank you for taking the time to read x
