Growing up in Boise, Idaho, I’ve always cherished Eagle Rock Park as a beautiful natural sanctuary in our community. However, as a dog owner, I’ve found it increasingly challenging to find safe, accessible places to let my pet roam freely. Our community is in dire need of a designated off-leash dog area, and I believe a part of Eagle Rock Park could serve this purpose perfectly.

Currently, there are no off-leash parks conveniently close to our neighborhood. Many dog owners already let their pets run free in the easternmost section of Eagle Rock Park, right off the off-leash trails. These trails now have dried-out grasses, which can embed into dogs' skin, sinuses, and ears, making them unsuitable for on-leash or off-leash walks. Dogs deserve a safe and spacious area where they can exercise and socialize without restriction.

I propose we designate a portion of Eagle Rock Park as an off-leash area for dogs between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM, and then again from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. These times ensure that dog owners can conveniently exercise their pets in the morning or evening, while the rest of the day can be shared with those who prefer a leash-only environment.

Creating these designated hours not only addresses safety and accessibility but also encourages responsible pet ownership and community engagement. It helps promote a harmonious environment for all park-goers without significant disruption to the current usage of the park.

With proper signage and community awareness, we can ensure that this change benefits everyone. Think of the joy and relief it would bring to countless pet owners and their furry friends, knowing there’s a safe place just around the corner for their pets to enjoy.
