Stop punishing SMI people for addiction, get them better quality help!
The Issue
Methenamine addiction is very hard for an addict to stop using and keep sobriety, especially after they start receiving charges and harsh prison punishment. Instead of being thrown into prison where they become more likely to relapse, find solutions like rehab, sober living, mental health resources, and support groups. Prison and a criminal record is not only damaging to a person's professional and social reputation but it can lead to worsening mental health.
If methenamine is decriminalized and if tax payers money goes towards providing a humane fair alternative solution to prison, addicts won't feel embarrassed, the likelihood of recovery increases, and they will be more likely to start being law abiding citizens which will make crime rates drop.
Our jails and prisons are past the point of overflowing which puts people with methamphetamine addiction at higher risk for catching illness, diseases and makes them more vulnerable to the abuse of power and bullying from the detention or corrections officers.
