Declaring Ram Mandir DAY evokes fears and anxiety for Indian Muslims

The Issue

Declaration of 22nd January as Ram Mandir DAY
This has the reference to your recent proclamation (Mayor of Brampton, Oakville and Milton) of 22nd January 2024 as Ram Mandir Day with an appeal to celebrate it as a symbol of unity and togetherness. We would like to draw your attention to the context associated with it.

This temple is being built at the very site of a now demolished medieval-century mosque known as "Babri Masjid". This mosque was built in 1528 AD and had stood there magnificently till 1992. In the year 1992, it was demolished by Hindutva zealots with the full support of state machinery.

It resulted in widespread riots and killings all over India with thousands of innocent persons losing their lives with majority of them being Muslims. Hindutva brigade later could not prove their ownership of the site in the Supreme Court of India but surprisingly it was awarded to them for temple construction. This temple which is being presently built is coming up at a huge cost of destruction and misery for the Muslim minority in India.

This issue has sensitivities associated with every Muslim person in your city and more particularly the Indian Muslims. This proclamation will serve to legitimize the suffering, humiliation and marginalization experienced by the Muslim minority of India.

This date is nothing more than a "black day" for every  Muslims.
