Declare State of Emergency in Oakland, CA & Introduce National Guard to Stop Crime
The Issue
**The organizer of this petition IS NOT ASKING FOR ANY FINANCIAL DONATIONS**
The City of Oakland, California is facing an unprecedented level of crime that has left residents feeling unsafe and vulnerable. The situation has escalated to the point where it is imperative for the CA Governor to declare a State of Emergency and introduce the National Guard to help fight out-of-control crime in the City.
Residents are living in fear as they witness brazen acts of violence on a daily basis. Shootings have become commonplace with innocent bystanders and children being caught in crossfire. Carjackings are rampant with criminals targeting unsuspecting victims at gunpoint. Dangerous sideshows and ATV and dirt bikes are racing in and around public parks terrorizing the the public. Home invasions and small business robberies at involving guns and automatic weapons are on the rise with families, workers and business owners being terrorized by armed intruders.
In 2022, Oakland police took nearly 20 minutes on average to respond with an officer or other staff to the most critical emergency calls*.
In 2023, citywide, residents witnessed 100 robberies in a single week, and 50 in a tumultuous 72-hour period**.
The situation is untenable, the local government isn't acknowledging the current state of things as being an emergency and is ignoring the quick uptick in violent crime. The main argument being that the aren't enough police officers to react. However this is a result of irresponsible policy making in the previous years that led to budget cuts, drop in number of police officers and limitations in their capabilities to take action against criminals.
This requires immediate action from our State. By declaring a State of Emergency and introducing the National Guard, the Governor can provide much-needed support for our local law enforcement agencies who are stretched thin and struggling to keep up with demand.
We urge you to take swift action before more lives are lost or irreparably damaged by this epidemic of crime that has taken hold in our beloved city.
