Declare Sebring Florida a Golf Cart community

Declare Sebring Florida a Golf Cart community
The Issue
Recently, a high school friend of mine faced public shaming on Facebook and open forums for driving his golf cart around the lake here in Sebring. This struck a nerve as it is a common sight in our area where golf carts very frequently share the roadways, yet my friend seemed to be singled out. The glaring difference? My friend is a person of color. It is unsettling to watch this happen while elderly white residents drive their carts daily without any scrutiny or backlash. This discrepancy suggests a deeper issue that needs attention, and I believe it’s time for a change.
I propose that we petition city officials, the County Commissioner, the Council, and the State to officially declare the entire city of Sebring a Golf Cart community. This means residents can freely use golf carts on bicycle paths, easements, and even roadways with speed limits of 35 mph and under. We must also emphasize yielding and slowing down to ensure the safety and coexistence of all road users. This change should also apply to e-bikes and scooters, where it doesn't already.
Transforming Sebring into a Golf Cart community not only addresses these unjust disparities but also enhances convenience for all residents. Picture a place where golf carts, bicycles, and pedestrians harmoniously share pathways and roads. Such inclusivity will benefit our community’s social cohesion and economic vitality, and might even reduce our emissions and carbon footprint, such as has been done in Viera, Florida.
Funding for signage and golf cart paths could be sought from local Golf Course Communities, Golf Cart owners in Highlands County, pro-golf restaurants, and the many retired individuals who cherish their golf carts for running errands or visiting friends. This initiative would also align with our community’s leisurely lifestyle and access to the lakes which has been lost due to concrete drainage engineering while promoting eco-friendly transportation alternatives.
It's not just about changing the law; it's about ensuring equity, inclusivity, and fairness for everyone in Sebring. Let’s make our city a leader in embracing diversity and supporting community-friendly policies.
By signing this petition, you can help us persuade local authorities to make this vital change. Together, we can create a more equitable and integrated Sebring for all its residents. Please lend your support by signing this petition today!
