I was 17, in my first band, sitting with our bassist and drummer in the back of our high school journalism class, when a solemn-faced teacher announced we were all going home early. John Lennon had been shot and killed in Manhattan the night before, and much of the world was just finding out. It was many years before his death sunk in, but I'll never forget the voices and faces of my teachers--mostly nuns and priests, people I thought I knew as strict, pious, professional, all visibly breaking down with the shock that somebody would murder a man who had brought so much joy to the world, and whose latest song 'Imagine' had just hit the airwaves. Like so very many, even these starchy old Catholics couldn't help loving the guy.
As Yoko Ono stated that day: "John loved and prayed for the human race. Please do the same for him."
RIP, John.
