Declare No-Construction Zones in Landslide-Prone Areas of Himachal Pradesh
The Issue
Himachal Pradesh is witnessing devastating landslides and floods every monsoon. These disasters are no longer natural — they are worsened by rampant, unplanned construction in ecologically fragile zones without proper environmental or geological surveys.
Every year, hundreds of lives and homes are lost due to landslides triggered by unsafe development. Large-scale deforestation, hill cutting, road-widening projects, and construction near riverbanks are done without assessing the environmental impact or geological risks. As a result, even small towns and villages are at constant risk.
Every year we demand the government to take some action but as the monsoon season passes we continue living on keeping the government and their actions unchecked. If this continues, like this year every, season passes the region will keep on being less liveable and more haunted and distributed.
We demand that the Government of Himachal Pradesh:
- Conduct mandatory environmental and geological surveys before approving any construction in hill or forested areas.
- Declare "no-construction zones" in highly landslide-prone regions based on scientific mapping.
- Implement and enforce Green Zones, especially near rivers, steep slopes, and forests.
- Make all environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and hazard maps publicly accessible.
- Cancel or halt any ongoing construction found violating these guidelines.
- Ensure collaboration between local dealers and dealers or construction engineers experienced in working on the fragile areas like Himalayas.
This is not just about saving nature — it’s about saving lives. We cannot afford another season of destruction. By acting now, the government can prevent future disasters and protect Himachal's fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
We are aware the Government want the so called development to promote tourism in the state but if we do not focus on sustainable development there will be no Himachal Pradesh to live let alone for tourism.
We urge concerned citizens, nature lovers, and all residents of Himachal Pradesh and the country to support this petition and hold the government accountable for protecting both people and the environment.
Because it's just not about the state it's about souls about the mighty Himalayas, if not saved right now whole ecology of the Himalayas will be severely disturbed and which will also impact the local life of the county as we are dependent on the Himalayan rivers. This is a call of action please help us, "SAVE THE HIMALAYAS".
