The Issue

India’s Arabian Sea is in crisis.
A vast dead zone — an oxygen-depleted area of ocean — is expanding dangerously along India’s west coast, especially near Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala killing the life in sea. If we do not act now, we are at risk of losing biodiversity, tourism income, and natural protection against floods.

We are calling on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and concerned authorities to declare the Arabian Sea dead zone a Marine Protected Area (MPA) under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Why This Is A Matter of Urgency:

1. The Arabian Sea has one of the world’s largest oxygen minimum zones (OMZs).
2. Coastal cities like Mumbai, Kochi, and Mangaluru face rising floods due to loss of natural coastal defenses.
3. Marine biodiversity is collapsing due to trawling, sewage, and plastic pollution.

We Demand:

1. Declare an MPA covering the Arabian Sea dead zone, spanning Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala.
2. Create strict no-fishing specific recovery zones to allow marine life to regenerate.
3. Enforce seasonal bans on fishing, plastic control, and anti-littering rules under MPA protection.
4. Establish a multi-state Marine Conservation Task Force to monitor and restore ocean health.
5. Link this initiative with Mission LiFE, Swachh Sagar Abhiyan, and India’s Blue Economy Vision.

How this can benefits India:

1. Creates eco-tourism jobs for coastal youth and local communities
2. Improves flood protection for cities by restoring mangroves, reefs, and seagrass beds
3. Positions India as a global ocean leader in climate and biodiversity action
4. Help the ocean thrive with life again

Let’s act now to turn a Dead Zone into a Life Zone.

This is a fight for our oceans, our economy, and our future.
