Declare Macqueripe Bay a Marine Protected Area

The Issue

"We live where you vacation" this cliché saying, holds true for all Caribbean Islands, this includes our twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Our country is one that is truly environmentally and culturally blessed, showcasing what the Caribbean is all about, our multicultural society forms a unique bond that is showcased in all that we do, from our vibrant carnival celebrations in Trinidad, to our white sand beaches and lush rainforests in Tobago and all that is between, we as Trinbagonians have a lot to be grateful for.                                                                                         Located in Trinidad, Macqueripe Bay is one of the gems we must appreciate,  known by many for its near all round calm and clear waters, its home to a diverse number of marine life, from Eagle Rays, French Angels to French Queen Angels, and even the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtle to name a few, it is truly a paradise for beachgoers, snorkelling and scuba diving enthusiasts alike.

Sadly however,  many persons don't see Macqueripe for what it really is, Macqueripe being one of the easily accessible and one of the limited beaches native to Trinidad which provides persons with a small look into what the ocean has to offer. Although home to beautiful marine creatures, it is also home to a large amount of discarded beer cans, pieces of clothing, plastic bags and fishing lines to name a few, together with this there are  the occassional spear fishers who come for the same precious marine animals most persons such as myself cherish. Although there are signs stating no littering, no removal of corals and marine life and NO SPEAR GUNS, persons still defy these laws out of ignorance, sadly this is the nature of some persons in our country. Just like many jewels native to our land that have succumbed to littering and shear neglect and care of persons. We have a beautiful country and we must ensure its well being. This land is ours!

This petition serves as a means of crying out to my fellow Trinbagonians in an attempt in making Macqueripe Bay a marine protected area (MPA) so that the various jewels that live beneath its waters can be better preserved for our future generations to come. Obtaining a MPA status ensures Macqueripe Bays a safe haven for species expansion, and sustainability and will provide an important contribution to the overall commercial fisheries of Trinidad and Tobago. In an attempt to get Macqueripe Bay to this status please share this and sign the petition.
