Declare April Parkinson's Awareness Month in San Carlos, CA
The Issue
An estimated one million people in the U.S. live with Parkinson’s disease, the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s and the 14th-leading cause of death in our country. Recent prevalence studies conducted by the Parkinson's Foundation suggest that there are 1,000 - 2,000 people in San Mateo County living with Parkinson's disease.
Symptoms vary, but can include tremors; difficulty with balance, swallowing, chewing and speaking; and cognitive impairment. Not to mention, a recent survey found that nearly half of the people with Parkinson’s noticed some negative change in their symptoms during the pandemic.
We citizens of San Carlos, CA, urge the city council to join the fight to generate awareness of Parkinson’s disease. Awareness makes life better for people with Parkinson’s disease by improving care and advancing research toward a cure. We humbly request that you declare April "Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month" in San Carlos.
