Declare a state of emergency in the San Luis Valley
The Issue
In the heart of the San Luis Valley, families like mine are grappling with a dire crisis that threatens our very way of life. Our water wells, once reliable sources of sustenance, are drying up or becoming inoperable due to the unsteady water table caused by this year's relentless drought. My two neighbors and I are among the many facing this unprecedented challenge, as our water wells have run dry.
The situation has reached a critical point. Without immediate action, the lives and livelihoods of residents throughout the San Luis Valley are at risk. Farmers are unable to irrigate their crops, which threatens food production and agricultural income. For families, the lack of water means a disruption in daily life, health, and sanitation.
The San Luis Valley, nestled amid breathtaking mountains and wide-open skies, is home to resilient communities accustomed to facing adversity. Yet, the current water crisis is unlike anything we have experienced before. According to data from the Colorado Water Conservation Board, our region has seen a substantial decline in precipitation, with current levels hovering well below the historical average.
In this context, we urgently call upon our local and state government officials to declare a state of emergency in the San Luis Valley. Such a declaration would unlock much-needed resources and support, allowing us to address the immediate needs tied to water scarcity. This includes funding for temporary water supplies, technical assistance for repairing and maintaining critical water infrastructures, and long-term planning investments to sustainably manage our region's water resources.
We need a coordinated response to mitigate the effects of this drought, ensure the safety and resilience of our communities, and protect the valley’s agricultural heritage. The time to act is now, before our situation worsens and more residents find themselves without access to one of life’s basic necessities.
Please sign this petition to urge our leaders to declare an emergency and help secure a sustainable future for the San Luis Valley. Your signature is a step towards safeguarding our communities, our farms, and our future. Together, we can make a difference.
