Declaration of Independence 2.0

On the Occasion of the Semiquincentennial of the United States of America

July 4, 2026

When in the course of human affairs, it becomes necessary for a people to determine whether their government continues to deserve their consent, respects those who came before us and bears responsibility to those who will follow, it requires that we reaffirm the principles upon which free societies are founded. We hereby declare the foundations of our common purpose.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all people are born equal in dignity and rights; that each possesses inherent worth; and that every person is entitled to life, liberty, justice, security, opportunity, and the pursuit of happiness.

Governments are instituted by the people as the means through which a free society governs itself. They are established to accomplish together what no individual can accomplish alone: to secure liberty, establish justice, protect equal rights and dignity, promote the common good, and preserve the conditions under which all may flourish. Their just powers arise solely from the consent of the governed, and their legitimacy endures only so long as they faithfully serve these purposes. All authority originates with the people, remains accountable to the people, and is held in trust for the people.

A government of the people, by the people, and for the people exists only when the people recognize that government is themselves. Public officials are merely temporary stewards of the authority that belongs to the people. The people therefore bear both the rights and responsibilities of self-government.

A Government Loses Legitimacy When:

  • Public office is treated as a private possession rather than a public trust.
  • The equal voice of citizens is diminished by wealth, influence, or institutional design.
  • The rule of law is applied unevenly, or accountability is eroded.
  • Transparency is reduced and public oversight is obstructed.
  • Truth is distorted, or public trust is undermined.
  • Representation fails to reflect the people it is meant to serve.
  • Barriers to participation weaken the egalitarian nature of government.

Legitimacy is not permanent. It must be earned continuously through fidelity to constitutional principles, equal justice, transparency, and accountability to the people.

Therefore, we declare that no government retains the trust of the people by default, by force of tradition, or by the holding of elections alone. Legitimacy arises only from the ongoing consent of the governed.

We declare that government is accountable to the people at all times, and that all authority exercised in the name of the public is a trust that may be withdrawn when it is abused or neglected.

We declare that the people are sovereign, and that no institution, office, or interest stands above their collective will as expressed through lawful and constitutional means.

We pledge our voices, our votes, our service, our vigilance, and our honor to one another and to the enduring work of government aligned with the aforementioned principles.

We commit to participate in civic life; to defend equal dignity; to demand accountability; to seek truth with humility; to respect lawful disagreement; to strengthen democratic institutions; and to leave to future generations a republic more just and more representative than the one we inherited.

This is not a petition to power, but a renewal of the people’s sovereign responsibility.
