Decatur and Macon County should not be further polluted to create more profit for corporations like ADM and Google or private equity firms' shell companies like Broadwing Energy.

We, the undersigned, are calling on the Decatur City Council and Mayor to revoke the 99-year lease of 224 square miles of the city and lake to ADM for the purpose of injecting and storing CO2 from carbon capture sequestration (CCS) to partially process Broadwing Energy Center’s natural gas turbine CO2 discharge.

The electrical output from the fossil fuel powered Broadwing Energy Center would produce 400mwh of electricity, enough to power 300,000 homes or, in this case, to help power Google’s data centers with “green” energy.   Neither natural gas nor CCS is a green energy solution.

ADM did not disclose their previous multiple leaks in the small-scale CO2 injection wells that they had been testing before they convinced the city government to lease the 224 square miles of land for 99 years for the price of 1.2 million dollars.  This is equivalent to $12,000 per year, which is less than some residents pay in property taxes. This CO2 will not become inert for more than 1,000 years.

This project will:
-Create more harmful air pollution in an Environmental Justice community, which already ranks high on the list of the worst air quality in the country
-Put the city and the surrounding areas' water supply at risk of being poisoned
-Use 3 to 5 million gallons of water per day, while our resource of water is already constrained
-Suffocate living creatures in the event of a large-scale CO2 leak
-Bring us further from our goals of transitioning to renewable energy to stop climate change
-Make our immediate area look more appealing to data center construction
-Increase the chances of earthquakes due to the high-pressure injection
-Possibly cause challenges for obtaining homeowners' insurance

We urge the City Council and Mayor to protect the safety and health of our community and the surrounding area by immediately initiating legal proceedings to nullify this outrageously insulting lease agreement.
