We, the undersigned, call upon the South Kingstown Town Council to uphold the long-standing tradition of appointing the highest vote earner in the local race as Town Council President. This practice not only respects the will of the voters but also ensures that our community's leadership reflects the democratic choice of its residents.

In the most recent election, Deb Bergner earned the highest number of votes (nearly 700 more votes than the next runner up)—a clear demonstration of the community’s confidence in her leadership. Historically, the Town Council has adhered to the practice of appointing the top vote earner as president, a tradition that reinforces trust in our local government.

Despite this, over the past two elections, Deb Bergner has been passed over for Town Council President in favor of Rory McEntee, the current Town Council President. This raises a critical question: How many times must a candidate, particularly a woman, surpass the incumbent to be afforded the leadership role she has undoubtedly earned?

This situation reflects a broader concern: the voices of women in politics and elected positions are becoming increasingly stifled. At a time when diverse perspectives are crucial to effective governance, denying women the leadership roles they have rightfully earned undermines the progress we have made toward equity and representation.

It is time for South Kingstown to reaffirm its commitment to fairness, equity, and democratic principles. We urge the Town Council to respect the mandate of the voters by appointing Deb Bergner as Town Council President, thereby upholding the tradition that ensures our leaders reflect the community’s choice.
